The arborvitae, also known as Thuja, can grow very tall, but in our region it is often cultivated as a shrub due to its excellent tolerance of pruning and winter hardiness, used to form evergreen hedges for privacy and wind protection. Its wood is also used, among other things, for the production of long-lasting roof shingles.

The arborvitae loves the sun, but also needs sufficient water to thrive. Therefore, it should be watered regularly, especially when young.

When crushed, the shoots have a very aromatic scent; however, you should wear gloves when crushing and also when cutting, as the arborvitae can cause skin irritation upon contact.

The larch is one of the few conifers that shed their needles in winter. In spring, the young, light green needles are edible; they have a tart, slightly sour taste reminiscent of lemon. In autumn, the needles turn yellow before falling.

Larch trees thrive in open areas, such as those cleared by avalanches or landslides, and can live up to 800 years. They are very resilient and tolerate extreme temperature fluctuations. Larch wood is particularly prized for bow making due to its flexibility.

In ancient times, the larch was considered a sacred tree whose protective powers warded off evil. Larch balsam has antiseptic properties and is therefore used medicinally to treat abscesses and boils.

Sea buckthorn has an exceptionally high concentration of vitamin C, which is why there are candies and health products of all kinds containing it. Less well known is that it also produces vitamin B12 through a symbiosis with bacteria on its outer skin.

Sea buckthorn doesn't grow particularly tall – reaching a height of up to six meters. Its dense branching and prickly thorns classify it as a shrub. However, it develops an extensive root system that allows it to cling to steep banks, making it a popular choice for soil stabilization.

The oil from the kernels is also said to have wound-healing properties.
